Best Application of the Year
by Matthew
I don't say this lightly but there is no question in my mind Psiloc's latest application Connect is by far the best application to come along in quite some time easily making it the best application of the 2008. Connect does something Nokia has neglected, automatic switching between mobile and Wi-Fi access points (AP). (Note: Application Network-level Roaming is included in FP2 and some ESeries devices) Install, set and forget it, not that you will forget the flexibility Connect affords. Since installing this small yet powerful application I have changed every application (except Jaiku, the only application with the slightest connectivity hiccup) to use Connect's virtual AP. The Virtual AP is where the power of Connect lies -- seamlessly and effortlessly switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks.
http://news.mobile9.com/s60apps/2008/05/05/psiloc-connect-the-app-weve-all-been-waiting-for/If you haven't yet has a chance to try Connect, download and install it today, your Wi-Fi enabled S60v3 device and wireless bill (especially if you don't have an unlimited data plan) with thank you. If seamless switching between mobile and Wi-Fi networks weren't enough Connect gives you the power to disable mobile data while roaming and easily disable of mobile data for all applications set to the virtual AP. Connect even tallies the potential savings from routing data over Wi-Fi.
Before using Connect most of my installed applications were set to prompt me for which AP to access to allow selection of Wi-Fi networks when available. That practice is now a thing of the past. I truly could not love an application that is so little more. Connect gives new meaning to the adage "less is more."
The folks are Psiloc haven't bought or paid me a dime for this endorsement, not that it would matter. Connect does what it does and does it well. Rarely do I give such glowing a rave reviews of any software application but don't take my word for it, download the 10 day trial and see for yourself today. I think you will agree and fall in love as I have.
I love this application so much I asked the good folks at Psiloc if they would share a couple licenses with our readers. Leave a comment about which applications you will use it in most before May 9th at 6PM CDT (-6GMT) and I will randomly select two people to receive a free license for this awesome application.

Sounds pretty cool. I will use this with Fring application and intellisync. Enables me to use Wifi in the offic and at home and 3G on the go.
Thanks for the hint

I've already set it up for ProfiMail, the app on my phone which without a doubt utilises my 3G-network the most. The switching betweeen networks is indeed seamless - I left my appartment last night leaving ProfiMail running and two minutes after leaving the area covered by my wifi it fetched new e-mails via 3G. Awesome!

This app will be great for using the Nokia Internet Radio app, podcasting and streaming the BBC with Realplayer. After downloading the trial, I'm wondering how I did without it - hopefully it will enable me to reduce the level I need on my data plan at present.
The review you've given just reflects my thoughts exactly.

It'd be most useful for the email accounts as well as for browsing the web. Luckily, N-Gage can handle up to two access points itself, but for the rest of the applications that have to connect to the web, Psiloc Connect would be the way to go.

I would love a license for that application, it sounds brilliant!
I would definitely benefit from it since data here in Denmark is really expensive, and dataplans the same. If given a license, I would benefit greatly from it in regards of emails (my personal POP3 mail and my company exchange push mail), when blogging and uploading e.g. images/videos to Ovi and Flickr. Not to mention checking bus plans etc. from the phone, which I have to do from time to time.

I wouldn't say it was the best application of the year, more like best idea of the year as I installed Connect to my N95 8GB and got system errors when opening some applications, including the web browser. I've now uninstalled and everything is working fine again. I'm not the only person finding problems, there are a few conversations in Jaiku on the matter.

Yes, it looks great !
I'll use it with IM+ :)
Keeping my fingers crossed.

About time an app like this came out for s60 lol. I'd totally use it most with Fring and the gmail app.

What do you think about psiloc phoning home to report how much you have saved? They have it as a footnote on http://connect.psiloc.com/ . Is this good practice?
I'll have a license if you can... I'm gonna most use it with nokia podcasting, so my podcasts can update no matter where I am :)
Posted by: Noah | May 07, 2008 at 06:47 AM
I will use it most with Windows Live Mobile, Opera Mini/the s60 Web Browser, and the built in email.

This sounds like an excellent idea. Like you, I have all my web apps set to prompt me for an access point, and a way to automate that process would be great. I can definitely see myself using this with the web browser, Gmail client, sync, Shozu (even though it already has a really good AP management system), Nimbuzz and Geocache Navigator. Almost more importantly, there are apps that don't let you set them to prompt, such as the Maps application on the N95, having an 'intelligent' access point to choose in this case will be awesome.

Application is Good but Internet phone like Truhone, Gizmo are not working with Psiloc Connect access point. I can connect to every thing with this even jaiku......

Sounds great, I'd love a license :)
...until I can get my hands on a FP2 device :P

Great, great application. I will use it most with SyncML and the Nokia web browser, of course!

I plan on using this to make connecting much less of a hassle with Nimbuzz and the Kyte Producer beta. I've tried the trial version out already and it works perfectly.

@Noah the phoning home practice isn't a concept I like terribly much, however if the data is in fact agregate and only collected while using a Wi-Fi connection I can live with it. TiVo has been doing this for year, although they do allow subscribers to opt-out. I haven't not asked Psiloc if that were an option.
@Arjun Parsi You are correct Gizmo does not see the virtual AP Connect created. I hadn't thought of testing it with Gizmo as one of my lesser used applications. Despite this I still love it for everything else. It does work with Jaiku but intermittenly.
Java App Tip: Go to Application manager > highlight java application > select Open from Options menu > Set Access Point to Connect. Note however once an Access point is specified it can not be undone and will require an AP selected.

What a great app -- between Podcasting, IM+, email, mapping, and all the other data intensive apps I use, this willg et a workout in no time

I would use the application with my SIP phone (embedded in Fring) in order to receive international calls from my company providers.

I installed it last night but after a few hours I uninstalled it. Stupid of me, but I couldn't tell when it was connected via wi-fi or gsm. Maybe I missed something. It is a great app, it just didn't specify.
I just downloaded my new N95 8GB firmware 20 and will reinstall it.
By the way, I would it mostly for my share online, web server and mt emtube downloads.

This would be a real smart saver for me :)

I would use it for Fring! Or Trackr!
Posted by: Rimes | May 07, 2008 at 03:44 PM
hello, id like to enter to win a license too lol. id use it with the built in web broswer, mobitubia, operamini, download, google maps and google search, youtube app, cellfire, ngage. its too bad the n95 video center can already auto switch albeit btn predefined access points.

Oh right, forgot to add the apps :P
Windows Live Messenger, Gmail app, Nokia Maps and probably the browser.
Posted by: Fernando | May 07, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Promising but ... does not work. I've tried to use it with the Nokia Podcasting in the hope that it would seamlessly switch between my home and work WLANs but it fails to connect. Maybe next version.

i will use it with web browser and mail application
antonis

This is a great app, something s60 has really needed. I downloaded and installed trial version. Seems that ever since I installed the app, my N95 has been buggier than ever with more random restarts and "General System" errors. I'm sure it is a conflict with another program runninig but until I figure out the conflict; I will not be purchasing this software.
Posted by: Vikki | May 08, 2008 at 11:07 AM
I will definetely use it on my N82 on applications such as Profimail, Slick, Windows Live Messenger and Widsets. (To e.g. get the latest updates from your blog >_< )
Almost being online all the time and traveling from my home to school it is quite inconvenient for me to have to switch accesspoints during connection.
Secondly I think I will use it for Online Share, N-gage, Podcasting and websurfing using either the inbuilt S60 browser or Opera Mini (Which the founders are from the country which I currently live in)
This will save me a lot of expenses as my telecom operator Telenor here charges up to 75 NOK for a little websurfing.

Finally!
I have been looking/waiting for an application like this! I'll be using it with Handy Weather mostly, to keep it up to date. Until now I had it set to my home AP, but that means it doesn't update while I am at the office.
Using 3G would be another option, but there's no such thing as a reasonably priced unlimited data plan here in Norway... :-/
Thanks for bring this product to my attention! :-)
