Mobile Geek Monday Q&A

by Matthew

Surprised more questions were submitted, only one thus far, I thought I'd go ahead and answer it sooner than Monday hoping we might see more participation.

Jen H asks:

Hi Darla,

I hope all is well in your world.

Here is my question:

When will the next firmware update be for the N95 - 1 (RM-159)?  The
last one was July and my little N95 needs some Nokia love.  It would
be particularly nice if they made the camera focus faster or at least
trust me and just snap.  Waiting for it to focus while the N95 picks
its nose is frustrating!

smiles, jen ;o)

Jen that is a great question and I'm certain that may might wonder similar things about their particular model. I know many of Darla's readers aren't use to have someone else on her blog, but we are both working together on adding more content and hopefully make the blog even better.

To answer your question it depends on which region and possibly which carrier your particular model was released. Nokia makes the same model but releases them in many markets with different languages and product codes. In many areas of the world there has been a update just a few weeks ago. The update includes many fixes and increase performance both in daily use and camera speed. Some users will sometimes change the product code to a region that has received the update but be forewarned this will void your warranty and there is a risk of "bricking" your device. It is not particularly difficult for but it does require installing several applications on your device and not for the faint of heart. If you haven't already done so download and install Nokia Software Updater. This software from Nokia will allow you to update your device at your computer without needing to visit a Nokia Service Center. Most recent models are able to be updated using this method. The software will tell you if there is no update available. Nokia does not usually announce when an update will be available however this kind of news is typically announced on this and other Nokia and S60 blogs.

I've also created a special address for these questions. Please email your questions to mobilegeek at darlamack dot com with Mobile Geek Monday as the subject.
